What We Know Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 people lost their lives and more than 40 were hurt when attackers fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to the hospital.

The deceased are yet to be publicly named, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the victims who have been named at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She described the events leading up to the attack, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed in the incident, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still under care, with several in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
