The Legendary Anime Ends a 27-Year Era in 2026

It's the end of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation announcing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in January, after the Egghead Island arc concludes, the animated series will go on a three-month hiatus until April, when the Elbaph arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, One Piece will produce a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio states this will help the anime to “explore further into the heart of the universe — incorporating more content, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” However, producers conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which suggests additional related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime had a six-month pause that began in late 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The intermission was for the production team to improve the animation quality and allow the comic to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The show greatly benefited from this break, and it has been able to supply viewers with numerous action sequences, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While some recap episodes sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the manga, which is presently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. According to the announcement, this may result in one episode of the series adapting a single manga chapter, with others instead covering more material or more to compensate for time.

It's the end of a generation for anime, as One Piece is the last big series to ditch the traditional method of creation, which prioritized airing for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have numerous side stories, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between installments and the next. Today, anime production is structured in cours, with a couple at most coming out each annually, allowing for improved visuals and more faithfulness to the source material.
