Prison Surprise: The Ex-President Bolsonaro Confronts Time in Prison
He battled the legal system and the law triumphed.
A couple of months after receiving a 27-year sentence for seeking to “eradicate” the nation's democratic institutions, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro at last seems destined for incarceration.
Expected Jailing
The convicted instigator – who has been under house arrest in his residence while a set of court processes and appeals unfold – is largely predicted to be jailed in the coming days, amid growing talk that he will be transferred to a well-known maximum security facility.
Previous Statements on Inmates
Throughout Bolsonaro’s four-decade public life, the right-wing ex- military man exhibited little compassion for the country's inmates.
“For what reason must we give these lowlifes a comfortable existence?” he previously wondered. “They ought to simply be messed, period. That’s what I reckon.”
On another occasion, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Unless you desire to end up in prison, all you have to do is to avoid rape, kidnap or rob.”
Jail Destination Discussion
Yet the idea of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda prison high-security prison in Brasília has shocked allies, four of whom this week inspected the facility in an obvious bid to discourage the judiciary from transferring him there.
Izalci Lucas, a senator from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was part of that quartet, said he anticipated the elderly leader to be incarcerated in the coming fortnight and worried his assigned prison could be Papuda.
He asserted Bolsonaro’s serious digestive issues – the outcome of a near-fatal stabbing during the 2018 presidential campaign – meant it would be dangerous to keep the former president there. “His condition is extremely serious. He will not be able to handle it if they send him to Papuda … It could be dreadful,” he commented, who also worried about overcrowded cells and the quality of jail cuisine.
During his tour Papuda, Lucas recalled witnessing cells accommodating forty detainees: “That is practically one square metre per detainee.
“We spoke to the inmates and they grumble, unsurprisingly, of the terrible food,” remarked the senator.
Supporters Speak Out
Lucas is not the only voice expressing views ahead of the one-time head of state's anticipated incarceration.
Writing in a prominent newspaper, one more backer, the ex- communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “brutal” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” time in office and claimed Brazil was about to experience “the greatest unfairness in its record”.
“This is an injustice that erodes the hearts of many people in Brazil,” he stated.
Divided Popular Response
This could be true due to the substantial backing Bolsonaro retains on the right-wing. However his predicted incarceration has also warmed the spirits of many individuals who think he ought to be jailed for plotting to stop the incoming president from assuming office – and even scheming to have him murdered.
Congressman Otoni, a politician for the incumbent leader's political party, commented: “Nobody desires Bolsonaro to be placed in a dungeon. Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be put in isolation. No one wishes Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We desire him to obtain dignified care – but respectful care in prison. He must not persist being his self-appointed guard for his lifetime.”
Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro backers, who have spent years celebrating the tough conditions of prisoners, had unexpectedly woken up to their rights. “Just now has the extreme right – which has repeatedly asserted that basic rights are not for offenders – decided to visit a prison to learn what situations are really like,” he remarked.
“Bolsonaro is a criminal,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he earned “shameful, insulting treatment”.
Possible Incarceration Conditions
Regardless of talk that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which currently holds about fourteen thousand inmates, his more likely location seems to be a adjacent prison for police officers and other “particular” inmates called Papudinha (Small Papuda).
Its cells are far more adequate than those in the larger jail, although nevertheless a far cry from the comfort Bolsonaro experienced while residing in the stunning leader's home, approximately 12 miles away.
As per sources, the room Bolsonaro could anticipate occupy in Papudinha measures about 24 square meters – about the dimensions of two parking spaces – and contains a 130 square foot bathroom with a water facility and a 12 square meter balcony. “He could be permitted to have a television and even a cooler in his room as long as they were supplied by his family,” the report suggested.
Political Reactions
He denounced the speculated idea to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “a type of retaliation” on the part of the presiding magistrate who presided over Bolsonaro’s legal case and will decide his outcome in the {
