Nicolas Sarkozy to Pen Prison Memoir Chronicling His 20 Days Behind Bars

Nicolas Sarkozy will soon publish a book in the coming weeks named Notes from a Cell, detailing his experience spent in jail.

The announcement emerged less than two weeks after Sarkozy left prison while he appeals the court ruling related to illegal collaboration regarding a scheme to acquire election campaign funds provided by the regime of Muammar Gaddafi.

Life Behind Bars: Inner Thoughts

“Inside jail visibility is limited, with little to occupy time,” he notes in an extract, indicating the memoir will focus on his musings during solitary confinement as opposed to a broader observation of the overcrowded and crisis-hit jail system in France.

“I forget silence, which is missing in that facility, where noise is endless commotion,” he states. “The racket is alas constant. However, akin to empty spaces, personal reflection is strengthened behind bars.”

Freedom Plea: Recounting the Hardship

While appealing for release, Sarkozy was present by video link from his cell, describing his time inside as draining. He had told the court: “I must acknowledge the correctional officers, who are exceptionally humane, and who have made this nightmare manageable – since it’s deeply troubling.”

“I never imagined that at 70 years of age, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s a trial I must endure. I confess it’s hard, extremely tough. It has an impact all who experience it as it’s exhausting.”

Historical Context

Sarkozy, who led the nation for a five-year term, set a precedent as past president of an EU country and the initial post-WWII figure from France to be incarcerated.

Before entering jail he had said he would use his time for authoring a memoir.

Books in Prison

It remains unclear did he manage to read and critique the three books he took into prison: a two-volume biography of Jesus and Alexandre Dumas’s novel The Count of Monte Cristo, a plot where a wrongfully accused individual is sentenced to jail then breaks out to take revenge.

Daily Reality

He was placed in solitary confinement due to safety concerns in a cell roughly 100 square feet including private facilities at the correctional facility located in the capital. Two bodyguards stayed in the next cell.

It was stated that he consumed just yogurt while inside because he feared meals provided might have been spat on. Options were available for self-catering but refused this, based on unnamed sources. Not known is if the memoir includes his dietary choices.

Lawyer’s Statements

Sarkozy’s lawyer, who saw him regularly daily during the incarceration, informed the court security would be better outside jail compared to inside. “He has faced death threats, listened to yells at night and the urgent intervention next door when a prisoner self-harmed.”

Case Background

His incarceration began on 21 October after the judiciary gave him five years in prison for illegal collaboration over a scheme to acquire election financing during his election campaign.

He maintains his innocence challenging the decision, and another court case set for next spring.
