Government Cuts Back US Flights as Government Closure Stretches On

With the historic federal government standoff approaches day 38, US airspace is about to get somewhat quieter. The same cannot be said for US air travel hubs.

Safety Measures Enacted

Donald Trump’s air traffic agency announced air travel is being curtailed to ensure air traffic control operational integrity during the federal government shutdown, setting a new duration record and with no sign of a resolution between conservative legislators and Democrats to end the federal budget standoff.

Airline regulators selected “congested corridors” where the FAA says air traffic must be reduced by 4% by 6am ET on Friday, an action that will compel airlines to call off thousands of journeys and trigger a chain reaction of scheduling problems and setbacks at key American travel hubs.

Administration Remarks

The administration's transportation head, Sean Duffy, wrote on X Thursday that the move was “not politically driven” but rather “involving evaluation the data and reducing building risk in the system as air traffic professionals continue working without pay”.

“Air travel remains secure today, tomorrow, and the day after because of the forward-thinking steps we are taking,” the official stated.

Airline Cutbacks

Analysts forecast hundreds if not thousands of flights might be called off. These reductions might account for approximately 1,800 flights and more than 268,000 seats total, based on an projection by the aviation analytics firm Cirium.

Impacted Locations

The involved terminals including over 25 states include the busiest ones across the US – such as Georgia's capital, CLT, Colorado's hub, DFW, Orlando, LAX, MIA and SFO. Within major metropolitan areas – like NYC, Texas city and Chicago – several air terminals will be involved.

Each of the three air terminals operating in the DC metro – Washington Dulles international, BWI Airport and DCA – will be involved, certainly generating schedule changes for elected representatives as well as other travelers.
