Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed outrage after the ex-president alleged a coalition of Democratic congress members of being "turncoats" and stated they should be detained and penalized "through capital punishment" following their publication of a contentious video.
The Content That Provoked the Controversy
The recorded message, published on earlier this week, includes six Democratic elected officials who previously worked in military or security positions.
"Like us, you all took an vow to safeguard and support this national charter," the representatives affirmed in the brief video. "Currently, the threats to our democratic foundation aren't just from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our laws are unambiguous, you can decline unlawful commands, you can refuse unlawful commands, you have to decline unlawful commands. No one has to follow directives that break the statutes or our founding principles."
Trump's Incensed Reaction
The video message appeared to provoke a angry reply from the previous commander-in-chief.
On later in the week, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another publication, he stated: "This is really bad, and Dangerous to our United States. Their words cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third publication, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a statement that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Leaders React
Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, Democratic leadership published a combined announcement denouncing the comments.
"Violent politics has no role in this nation," they wrote. "Representatives who were featured in the video all worked our nation with great patriotism and honor. We strongly condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and risky threats of violence against congressional representatives, and appeal to House Republicans to strongly do the same."
The party representatives also mentioned that they had been in contact with security officials "to ensure the safety of these representatives and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must immediately remove these extreme digital publications and withdraw his violent rhetoric before he causes harm," the announcement stated.
Representatives' Defiant Answer
The officials who appeared in the video also published a declaration.
"We are veterans and national security professionals who care for this country and made an pledge to defend and uphold the constitution of the United States," they said. "Our pledge is permanent, and we plan to keep it. No intimidation, coercion, or promotion of aggression will deter us from that sacred responsibility."
"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president views it subject to penalty by death for us to restate the statutes," they stated. "Military personnel should understand that we have their support as they carry out their pledge to the constitution and responsibility to adhere to only proper directives. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They continued: "All citizens must join forces and censure the ex-president's demands for our death and partisan aggression. This is a moment for ethical certainty."
Further Governmental Responses
The Democratic Senate minority leader also condemned Trump's remarks and shared on digital platforms: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is requesting the capital punishment of public representatives."
He added: "This represents an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, every American – irrespective of political affiliation – should denounce this immediately and absolutely."
The GOP leader justified Trump's allegation that the Democrats had participated in "rebellion", labeling the video as "extremely improper", stating: "This constitutes very harmful, you have prominent officials of the legislature instructing troops to ignore directives, I think that represents historic in American history."
The GOP official also according to sources informed media outlets that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the crime of treason" but that "lawyers have to analyze the wording and determine all that."
Executive Branch Statement
During a administration briefing on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a reporter, "Is the president want to kill elected officials?", the White House press secretary responded: "Certainly not."
"Let's be clear about what the former president is reacting to," the representative stated. "We see sitting members of the American legislature who conspired to orchestrate a digital communication to members of the US military, to current military personnel urging them to ignore the commander in chief's lawful orders."
She said: "The integrity of our armed forces depends on the chain of command, and if that structure is broken, it can cause casualties, it can cause chaos, and precisely what these members of Congress ... are fundamentally promoting."
