Chornobyl Disaster Containment Structure No Longer Blocks Radiation, Requires Major Restoration – IAEA

A protective shield covering the Chornobyl reactor core within Ukraine has lost its main safety function of containing radioactive material, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This failure follows a drone attack earlier this year that blew a hole in the structure.

A drone strike in the second month of the year caused a breach in the multibillion-euro “new safe confinement” arch. This massive shield, built at a cost of €1.5bn and completed in 2019, was designed to contain radiation over the long term. A recent IAEA inspection last week found that the drone impact had degraded the structural integrity of the steel confinement.

The containment arch's main safety functions, such as confinement, are no longer operational, stated IAEA director general Rafael Grossi. Grossi noted that inspectors found no lasting harm to its load-bearing structures or monitoring systems.

The initial 1986 explosion at the Chernobyl plant – which occurred when Ukraine was part of the USSR – spewed radioactive fallout over much of Europe. Ukrainian authorities previously reported that a drone armed with a powerful explosive struck the plant, igniting a blaze and damaging the outer shielding.
